ISL Appoints Avory as Senior Vice President

22 Nov 2000

ISL Asia Pacific is delighted to announce that Richard Avory has joined the company as its Chief Representative in Beijing and Senior Vice President.

ISL Asia Pacific general manager, Chris Horrigan said Richard's appointment, 'represented a strong commitment from ISL to strengthen and expand ISL's operations in China'. ISL Asia Pacific represents the national football teams of China, which are marketed together in China's first-ever integrated sponsorship opportunity known as Team China.

Richard brings a wealth of experience to his new job. After graduating from Cambridge University and representing Great Britain at tennis, Richard was the deputy general secretary of the 1974 Teheran Asian Games Organising Committee. He was directly responsible for PR China's decision to compete in the Asian Games for the first time.

In 1975 Richard joined International Management Group (IMG) where he worked until his resignation as senior international vice president in 1999.

Richard established IMG's office in Hong Kong in 1979 and from then until 1993 was responsible for the first events IMG staged in China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and India. As well as his event responsibility - Richard was also responsible for IMG opening offices in 15 Asian cities.

In China Richard was responsible for IMG's working relationship with 14 different Chinese national sports federations including the Chinese National Football League (established 1994) and the Chinese National Basketball League (established in 1995).

IMG's managing director, Breck McCormack commented, Richard made, 'a huge contribution to IMG's growth in Asia ... and especially in China where Richard's contributions have been extraordinary'.

Immediately before joining ISL Richard was the senior international vice president of the Asian Basketball Association.
