IWWF World Cup Series returns to China’s Linyi City this weekend for the YiHe Open Wakeboard Championships
![]() ![]() With over 3.5 million participants in the USA alone, the global boom in Wakeboard is reflected in the high quality international entry in this Stop of the World Cup Series on September 26/27. Created by the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF), and in cooperation with the Chinese Water Ski Association, competitors from around the world are arriving in Linyi City today for the weekend event. These include Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Republic of Korea, Republic of South Africa, Sweden,Thailand and USA. For Linyi City’s 10 million population, the magnificent downtown grandstand arena on the banks of the Yi River will see national, continental and world champions competing for the coveted World Cup titles. Included in the entry list will be both the male and female IWWF World Wakeboard Champions Harley Clifford AUS and Raimi Merritt USA – the super stars of the sport today. Both also happen to be the defending Linyi Yi He Open Champions. In addition to China, twenty-one year old Raimi Merritt has won more World Cup Stops than almost any other athlete, including in Australia, Indonesia, Borneo, Korea, and Qatar. She took the title of IWWF World Champion in 2013 and 2011 and also the US Masters title in 2013. Watch for the blue hair on the dock in Linyi ! ![]() ![]() Harley Clifford is on a roll and almost unbeatable at the moment. As with Raimi Merritt, he has taken the title of World Champion in both 2011 and 2013. He has also taken World Cup titles here in China, plus in Australia, Indonesia and Borneo. In May of this year, he stunned the world of Wakeboard in being awarded a perfect score on a run of ten tricks, including three double inverts in a single run, at the US Masters in Callaway Gardens. This Linyi World Cup Stop, combined with the YiHe Open Championships, will also feature a Show Ski Display by members of the Chinese Water Ski Association. China impressed all with one of the most colorful displays at the World Show Ski Tournament in the Wisconsin USA last year. Immediately following this Linyi World Cup Stop, the IWWF will move to Shanghai for the final event in the Series this year.
