KirchSport Appoints Sports Marketing Surveys for World Cup TV Role

Soccer - 10 Jun 2002

KirchSport AG, the company responsible for the global marketing and sales of the broadcast rights to the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, has put in place one of the most extensive worldwide monitoring systems in sports history to protect the exclusivity of the official 'Broadcast Partners' of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

KirchSport has appointed UK based Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd. as their official Television Research & Monitoring Centre to undertake this programme. When the event kicks off today, live monitoring will take place covering all major international markets and broadcast channels to ensure that World Cup coverage is not being broadcast on any non-rights holding channels.

Over 120 channels will also be monitored to ensure that sponsors' and partners' rights for the use of 2002 FIFA World Cup(tm) logos and marks are fully protected.

In addition, an Internet Infringement Monitoring Programme also carried out by Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd. will identify any audio, video or 'virtual' content appearing on the Internet. The Internet Infringement Monitoring Programme will monitor websites that have high traffic volumes in the key football-oriented and commercial markets, such as sports sites, broadcaster sites, betting sites, news sites and TV replay.

More than 3,000 key websites will be subject to monitoring and have already been subject to automated and manual searches which will continue during and after the event. Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd will also conduct an extensive communications campaign targeting the world's largest Internet service providers (ISPs), portals and Internet proxies to ensure that everyone is fully aware of the rights situation.

Sports Marketing Surveys have set up a process of infringement notifications and warnings which if not actioned within a stipulated period may see KirchSport commence legal action in order to protect KirchSport, FIFA and the official licensees' contractual rights.
