Korean Prime Minister Leads Events to Mark 50 Days To Go Until The International Olympic Committee Elects Host City for 2014 Winter Games

Olympics - 15 May 2007

The Prime Minister of South Korea led events in Seoul on 15 May to promote PyeongChang’s bid with 50 days to go until the International Olympic Committee elects the city to host the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Minister for Culture and Tourism Kim Jong-min, Chairman of the bid committee Han Seung-soo, President of the Korean Olympic Committee Kim Jung-kil and leading athletes joined 300 others taking part in an event at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism including speeches, music and dance performances.

Prime Minister Han said:
”We need to make a final, all-out effort so that we promote PyeongChang to be the optimal place for the best Games. For the remaining 50 days, let’s do our utmost for a successful bid.”

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism unveiled additional advertising to harness the enthusiasm of the Korean people for PyeongChang’s bid. In Seoul LED electronic signs will be on display and there will be posters in the subway. Advertisements will also be visible in major cities throughout the country and on popular websites.

Meanwhile, in PyeongChang about 1,000 people from around the country showed their support for the bid by climbing the slopes of Mount Balwang, one of the proposed venues for alpine skiing.

On 16 May a spring and summer fashion show in aid of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will be hosted by renowned designer Andre Kim in Gangneung, the planned location of ice hockey, curling and skating events in 2014. The fashion show, which will be attended and supported by Han Seung-soo, Chairman of PyeongChang 2014, will have the themes of white, purity and dreams. The 1,500 tickets available sold out well in advance.

Chairman Han Seung-soo said:
“PyeongChang 2014 is focused on spreading the Olympic Movement to the world by hosting amazing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and by leaving an outstanding legacy for winter sports in Asia. We are fortunate to have such strong support from the Korean people and government, which are great assets in demonstrating PyeongChang’s ability to host the Games.”
