ASOIF Council holds its first meeting of 2015

Olympics - 05 Mar 2015

Lausanne, 05.03.2015

Chaired by its President Francesco Ricci Bitti, the ASOIF Council met yesterday in Lausanne to discuss several important topics including the model for the 2016 Olympic Games International Federations (IFs) Revenue Distribution to be presented to the General Assembly in April, the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020, the status of the IF Sports Data Platform project and preparations for the 2015 ASOIF General Assembly.

Francesco Ricci Bitti said after the meeting: “This year will be exciting for the Olympic Movement in general and for the Summer Olympic International Federations in particular. We are fully ready to support the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020 and are looking forward to a number of test events in Rio as a very important milestone for a successful 2016 Olympic Games. Our project of an IF (shared) Sports Data Platform is also reaching its final phase with the strong support of the IOC and our members alike.” He added: “I would like to thank my colleagues on the Council for their hard work and am looking forward to meeting all our members at our General Assembly in April.”

The formula for the 2016 Olympic Games IF revenue distribution will incorporate the new revenue groups as announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2013. Yesterday, the Council further refined its proposal on revenue distribution which will be proposed to the next ASOIF General Assembly.

IOC Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi and IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell joined the Council meeting to present the ongoing implementation of the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations. Recommendation 13 foresees an enhanced role for the IFs in the planning and delivery of the Olympic competitions. Following the official adoption of Olympic Agenda 2020 by the IOC Session last December, a joint IOC‐ASOIF working group has been set up to define the IF roles and responsibilities in the different phases of an Olympic Games project (bidding, preparation and delivery). The ultimate goals are to maximise synergies among Olympic Movement stakeholders, ensure a seamless organisation of the Games and, last but not least, reduce costs.

Furthermore, the Council discussed progress made in the development of an IF (shared) Sports Data Platform. The initiative, which enjoys the full support of the IOC, aims to offer a one‐stop‐shop for historical sports data worldwide on behalf of the Summer Olympic International Federations. It is about significantly improving data standards, data integration and quality for the Olympic Games and facilitating greater media exposure for the Summer Olympic sports across all platforms. ASOIF is currently working on license agreements with each of its member federations, and the final implementation phase of the project will be discussed at the next General Assembly.

ASOIF will hold its next Council meeting on 21 April 2015, in Sochi, Russia, during the SportAccord Convention. The General Assembly is scheduled to take place the following day at the same location.

The ASOIF Council decided also to hold a separate meeting on 23 April to discuss specific points related to the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to which representatives of the two Organising Committees and the IOC will be invited.

Background information

ASOIF’s role is to serve and represent the Summer Olympic International Federations in the most competent, articulate and professional manner on issues of common interest in the Summer Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement, and on any other matter deemed necessary by the IFs.

The Council is composed of the ASOIF President, six Members (all from different Federations) and the ASOIF Executive Director. One of the six Members is elected as Vice‐President. The President and all the Members are elected by the ASOIF General Assembly for four‐year mandates. Tasks of the Council include to prepare, conduct and manage the General Assembly as well as to implement the decisions and resolutions taken by it.
