Leading Golfer Michelle Wie Putts Her Support Behind Daegu 2011 Bid

Golf - 12 Feb 2007

(DAEGU, February 12, 2007) – Leading golfer Michelle Wie has become the latest international sports star to back Daegu’s bid to host the 2011 or 2013 World Championships in Athletics.

Ms Wie, whose family is from South Korea, said: “I believe Daegu has all the ingredients to host a fantastic IAAF World Athletics Championships. As a Korean-American, I am excited by the prospect of a major sporting event coming to South Korea.

“I'd like to wish Daegu the very best of luck as the city competes for the 2011 and 2013 IAAF World Athletics Championships."

The South Korean city is in the final stages of preparation for the IAAF Evaluation Visit at the end of February with its World Cup stadium and visions for the future of athletics at the heart of its bid file submission.

Bidding Committee chief, President Yoo Chong-Ha said: “We are delighted and honoured that Michelle Wie has expressed her support for Daegu’s bid.

“Ms Wie has achieved so much in her short career and her internationally-recognized sporting values are those which we are seeking to promote through our campaign.

“We are committed to trying to bring this prestigious sporting event to Daegu and just as Ms Wie has raised the profile of Korea throughout the world, we hope to bring the world to Korea in 2011 or 2013.”

Gold medal winning hurdler Liu Xiang, former American 110m hurdles world champion Allen Johnson and 100m gold medalist Lauryn Williams have already backed Daegu’s bid.
