Lengthy Bans for Players Caught Doping at Fifa World Youth Championship
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee met in Zurich on 22 December under the chairmanship of Marcel Mathier (Switzerland) to deliberate on the cases of the players, Amir Azmy (Egypt) and Alexander Walke (Germany), as the result of positive doping tests which the players underwent at the FIFA World Youth Championship UAE 2003 after the matches Egypt-Japan on 5 December 2003 and Germany-USA on 2 December 2003 respectively.
The players were given the option of appearing before the Disciplinary Committee to be heard personally but declined to do so. After examining the written evidence and listening to Professor Jiri Dvorak, chief medical officer at FIFA, and Goetz Eilers, representative from the German football association for the German goalkeeper, Walke, the Committee deliberated on the cases and then passed the following decisions:
1. The player, Amir Azmy (positive test for nandrolone), is found guilty of doping under the terms art. 60 ff. FDC and is to be suspended from 9 December 2003 to 8 February 2005. He also has to pay a fine of CHF 15,000.
2. The player, Alexander Walke (positive test for tetrahydrocannabinole (carboxy-THC), a metabolite of cannabis), is found guilty of doping under the terms of art. 60 ff. FDC and is to be suspended for 7 months from 9
December 2003, i.e. up to 8 July 2004. The player is also to be fined the sum of CHF 10,000.
In each case, the suspension covers all types of matches including domestic, international, friendly and official fixtures.
An appeal may be lodged against these decisions to the FIFA Appeal Committee, within three days of receipt of the reasoned decision to be sent subsequently.
