Major League Baseball Offers Online Video on Demand

Baseball - 26 Jul 2001

MLB Advanced Media, LP (MLBAM), the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, has launched its revolutionary on demand, customizable video product, 'MLB.com Custom Cuts.' Combined with its game day audio subscription product, this marks the first time so rich an array of multimedia interactive sports programming ever has been made available on the Internet.

'MLB.com Custom Cuts' transforms coverage of baseball games into on-demand video programming, offering users the ability to search for and create customizable video highlights of daily game coverage and providing a flexible way for baseball fans and fantasy-league enthusiasts to compile and review footage of their favorite teams and players on a daily basis. By providing archival access to every pitch from every game, this personalized video service will let individuals choose the exact game highlights they want to watch.

The Kansas City Star recently reported, 'Right now, on MLB.com, there is something called 'Custom Cuts.' It is absolutely incredible. You can go on there and basically watch anything you want in baseball. Anything...And this is the neatest gadget in sports right now...Major League Baseball got here first.'

MLBAM has teamed with Virage, Inc. [NASDAQ: VRGE], a leading provider of software products and application services that enable video for the Internet, to develop and distribute programming and video coverage of the 2001 Major League Baseball season on MLB.com, the official web site of Major League Baseball. Using the online database of video and statistics, fans will be able to search selectively for and view particular game, player, or team highlights shortly after each game ends.

MLBAM is transforming the television coverage of the 2001 season into interactive online content. MLBAM video editors and producers will create streaming video game-highlight packages for same-night coverage on MLB.com.

The new product is available now at www.mlb.com and is in addition to the standard video highlights of every televised game currently offered on the site.

'Our goal is to make MLB.com the premier destination for baseball fans on the Internet,' said Bob Bowman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MLBAM. 'We now offer the most comprehensive and interactive baseball audio and video content available. 'MLB.com Custom Cuts' gives our fans true interconnectivity, allowing them to see specifically what they want, when they want it. We believe the new video service will be a must have for the avid fan or fantasy player.'
