Audience Increases to Almost 10m Viewers for 2013 Preakness Stakes on NBC
US national television network NBC earned its largest audience for horse racing’s Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, in four years for last Saturday’s race.
Live coverage of Oxbow’s win at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland drew 9.7 million viewers, an increase of 20 per cent on the audience of 8.1 million for the 2012 race, according to The Nielsen Company.
This was the highest audience for the Preakness Stakes since 2009, when 10.9 million viewers tuned in, and has been surpassed on only two other occasions since 1990, in 2004 (11.6 million) and 2006 (10.1 million).
NBC achieved a household rating of 5.9 and a 14-per-cent share for its coverage of this year's Preakness Stakes, a 13-per-cent increase on the 5.2 rating and 13-per-cent share for the 2012 edition.
NBC attracted 16.2 million viewers, a 9.7 rating and 21-per-cent share for the 2013 Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the Triple Crown, earlier this month and will also offer exclusive live coverage of the final leg, the Belmont Stakes, on June 8.
