New Ball Partnership for Super League

Rugby league - 18 Feb 2004

Tetley's Rugby Super League IX - which starts this Friday -will see the introduction of a new official match ball.

This follows the appointment of the Steeden brand as the official supplier to the competition as well as for the Rugby Football League's major matches.

In a three year agreement, valued at six figures, the Australian based company - who also provide footballs for the NRL Telstra Premiership down under - will supply a new design of ball which has been put into production for the UK after extensive consultation with leading British coaches and testing by players.

The new Steeden ball was used in last Friday's World Club Challenge game between the Bradford Bulls and Penrith Panthers.

In choosing the Steeden match ball for Tetley's Rugby Super League IX it means that the same ball is being used in the world's two most hard fought competitions.

In addition to the match balls Steeden have developed a range of exciting supporter products and club replica balls that will be available from all club shops.

Commenting, RFL Marketing Director Chris Green said: 'We are delighted to be introducing this new Steeden ball to both the Tetley's Rugby Super League and RFL competitions.’

'The new design has been tremendously well received by both players and coaches when they tested it and we look forward to seeing the ball in action when the games begin this weekend.’

Steeden UK Sales Manager James Lawrence says 'The Tetley's Rugby Super League is currently on a high, enjoying a lot of exposure and this season's competition is sure to be hotly contested yet again. We are very pleased to have this partnership with Super League, and are looking forward to a long and successful relationship together.'

Steeden is owned by Gray-Nicolls Sports Pty Ltd who have appointed Grays of Cambridge International Limited as sole European distributor.

Grays also own Gilbert Rugby the previous ball supplier to Tetley's Rugby Super League.

Richard Gray Marketing Director of Grays said: 'We are delighted that the Steeden has been chosen by the Tetley's Rugby Super League. Steeden is now the clear ball of choice for the sport worldwide. This tremendous exposure at the highest level will give the brand a superb kick-start to launch into the UK and European markets. The Steeden ball has been - and will continue to be - specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of Rugby League.'
