New opinion poll reveals that 91 percent of the Spanish population support Madrid’s bid to host the 2020 Games
Buenos Aires, 4 September 2013 - According to an opinion poll conducted by the firm Mediapost for Madrid 2020’s managing body, more than 91 percent of the Spanish population back the Spanish capital’s bid to stage the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a level of support higher than that registered in previous polls.
Conducted between 12 and 16 August 2013, the survey involved 2,000 random telephone interviews with residents across Spain and has a margin of error of ±2.2 percent.
The poll yielded a number of results, among them the fact that 88 percent of those surveyed believed it would be good for the country if Madrid hosted the Games, while 89% said that staging a sporting event of such magnitude would enhance the image of Brand Spain.
Geographical areas and age groups
Some 480 of the 2,000 calls were conducted in the city of Madrid, 720 in the rest of the Autonomous Region of Madrid and the remaining 800 elsewhere in Spain.
In terms of age groups, 265 respondents were under 25, 694 aged between 25 and 34, 412 between 35 and 44, 275 between 45 and 54, 209 between 55 and 64, with the remaining 145 aged over 64.
Support for Madrid’s bid was highest among 25 to 34-year-olds, with 94.52 percent of participants in this age bracket saying they wanted the city to organise the 2020 Games. Some 93.1 percent of this group also said Spain would benefit if Madrid was given the 2020 Games, with 92.9 percent of them saying that it would also enhance the image of Brand Spain around the world. Both these figures were higher than those recorded in any other age group.
Out of the 2,000 people interviewed, 1,820 (91 percent) said they supported the Madrid 2020 Bid, while 180 (9 percent) said they did not.
More than 70,000 volunteers
Popular support for the bid has been reflected in a very significant increase in volunteer numbers, with the 70,000 mark being reached today, the same number that took part in the London Games a year ago.
The backing of stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment such as Iker Casillas and Alejandro Sanz has played a big part in persuading people to join the Madrid 2020 cause as volunteers, as has the fact that decision day on 7 September is approaching fast.
