Australian Football League Counters Breakaway
The Australian Football League (AFL) has noted today the media release advice regarding the formation of the International Australian Football Confederation (IAFC).
The IAFC stated in its release distributed today that it sought to be the international body for Australian Football and that its sole focus would be to develop and grow the game internationally.
The AFL's view is that all efforts to expand the game around the world by all supporters of football are greatly appreciated but that the league is surprised the IAFC has newly come into being as an organisation.
By way of background, the International Australian Football Council, a registered body, has been working with the AFL over the past 12 months on the best strategy to further the development and profile of Australian Football internationally.
The International Australian Football Council Executive Committee decided last week to pass a resolution to wind up the company in August next year, when a quorum of members will be able to meet, enabling the AFL to formally establish an International Development Committee.
This International Development Committee will be chaired by AFL Game Development Manager Dr Ross Smith and will include representatives from Europe, North and South America and the Pacific/Asia/Africa bodies.
This process was agreed upon between the AFL and the International Australian Football Council as the best path to develop the game outside Australia and the AFL is disappointed that a different process is now being undertaken by some parties.
