Official World Internet Chess Championships Launched
FIDE Commerce International Ltd. (FCI), exclusive holders of commercial rights to all FIDE world chess events, are delighted to announce the launch of the official World Internet Chess Championships (www.wicc.fide.com).
The 60,000,000 estimated chess enthusiasts around the world can now sign up for the qualification programme to The World Internet Chess Championships (WICC) and compete for the first time for official status, ratings and titles for Internet chess players. It will also offer the opportunity for players to be selected to compete in offline (traditional) chess tournaments, including The World Chess Championships (WCC).
For the 2001 World Chess Championships, eight places have been allocated exclusively for players competing in the World Internet Chess Championships. The selected few could face grandmasters such as Anand, Shirov, Khalifman, and Adams. They will then be competing for prize money totalling circa $3 million (USD).
It is proposed to also make several places available for Internet qualifiers in the first World Chess Grand Prix Final – the ‘Champions League’ of chess, where the top 32 players in the world regularly compete on an international stage.
Individual web sites can be part of this new global initiative by hosting WICC qualifying competitions. To register, individual sites need only follow the tournament regulations and accommodate the special FIDE/FCI Tournament Hall in their respective gaming zones.
With over 7,000,000 active registered players in 159 member countries and the estimated 60,000,000 enthusiasts globally, the potential to increase web traffic, enhance individual sites and generate capital is immense.
Every player who takes part in these online competitions will have to pay a nominal subscription fee. This fee is necessary to administrate the tournaments and to establish decent prize funds. FCI will pay a commission to individual web sites for every player taking part in these tournaments through their web site.
FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs), under the patronage of the IOC, is recognised as the Governing Body of chess globally. The official web site of the World Internet Chess Championships is www.wicc.fide.com
