Ottawa to Host 2006 BMO Financial Group Canadian Championships
LONDON, ON: At the opening press conference today for the 2005 BMO Financial Group Canadian Championships, Skate Canada announced that the 2006 BMO Financial Group Canadian Championships will be held in the nation's capital at the Ottawa Civic Centre January 9-15, 2006.
The economic impact of this event to the City of Ottawa is estimated at $8.0 million, with more than 65,000 spectators expected to attend this major sporting event. An average of nearly 1 million people are expected to watch the event daily during 10 hours of national television coverage on CTV and TSN.
'The 2006 BMO Financial Championships will be extremely important in determining the Canadian team that will compete at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, as well as the 2006 ISU World Championships, which will be held in Calgary, Alberta, from March 20-26, 2006,' said Pam Coburn, Skate Canada CEO. 'We look forward to a very intense and competitive event.'
Ottawa has hosted a total of 11 Canadian Championships dating back to 1922. The city most recently held the national championships in 1999. At this event, which also took place at the Civic Centre, Elvis Stojko won his fifth of seven Canadian titles, Jennifer Robinson claimed her second of six Canadian titles, Kristy Sargeant and Kris Wirtz captured their second Canadian Pair title, and Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz won their seventh of 10 Canadian Ice Dance titles.
'Skate Canada is very excited to bring such an important figure skating event to the City of Ottawa,' said Coburn. 'We have held very successful national and international skating events in Ottawa in the past, and we look forward to bringing the excitement of the BMO Financial Group Canadian Championships to Ottawa once again.'
Approximately 250 skaters in Women's, Men's, Pair and Ice Dance disciplines compete at the senior and junior levels at the BMO Financial Group Canadian Championships.
