Penta Mistral Cup 2000: The first major windsurfing regatta of the new millennium

Windsurfing - 28 Jul 1999

The first Mistral One Design event of the new millennium, The Penta Mistral Cup 2000, is being staged in Safaga on the Red Sea, Egypt between 14th and 22nd January. The prize money is the highest ever for the Olympic Class with the men set to win US $35,000 and the women US $17,500.

IMCO International will provide key personnel in the Race Committee and ensure quality racing on behalf of all concerned.

Being staged for the first time, the Penta Mistral Cup 2000, will be a technically demanding course racing event using a very similar format to that proposed for the Sydney Olympics. Racing will be on windward/leeward courses with gates top and bottom offering the maximum number of attacking opportunities. Competitors at the front will not, therefore, have an easy time and position changes could be dramatic in the expected 15 to 20-knot winds.

Some top names should be competing including Olympic medallists such as Nikos Kaklamanakis (GRE), Bruce Kendall (NZL), Mike Gebhardt (USA), Carlos Espinola (ARG), and Gal Friedman (ISR), Lee Lai Shan (HKG), Barbara Kendall (NZL), Alessandra Sensini (ITA), Jessica Crisp (AUS), Andrea Hoeppner (GER) and Sigi Rondelez (BEL).

Safaga, host to the 1993 Production Board World Championship, has fast become one of the most popular European windsurf destinations due to it's thermal winds, warm climate and beautiful clean sea.
