The time has finally come: the 2007 FIS World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships will open at the weekend in Zauchensee and Flachau with over 40 nations registered to take part. The pistes are in peak condition, the entire team is strained, but calm. Ignoring the caprices of the weather, the pistes at both venues have been in perfect condition since the beginning of winter.
The statement from Alex Reiner, head of the Salzburg state skiing federation, is short and to the point: “All races will be arranged so that all participants have fair conditions“. The FIS World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships are taking place for the first time in Zauchensee and Flachau. As the Salzburg 2014 concept also places the speed competition in Zauchensee and the technical competition in Flachau, this will be a kind of dress rehearsal. There is, however, no need for stage fright, as both venues have guaranteed high quality sporting events for decades. World Cups and World Championships have taken place here to the satisfaction of athletes, officials, the media and sports federations alike. The World Cup final in Altenmarkt in 2002 is often referred to as the best final of all time.
Heinz Stoll, in charge of the pistes in Zauchensee, comments: "Both venues, Zauchensee and Flachau, are prepared in the best possible way. As we saw at the Women’s World Cup in January, we are ready for all eventualities and can deal with any situation. The team has been designed so that it works like clockwork. It is a great advantage, which is the result of decades of experience. It is fun to work with such professional co-workers and partners."
Gernot Leitner, Executive Director of Salzburg 2014 states: “We are very pleased that Zauchensee and Flachau are venues for the 2007 FIS World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships. Above all it shows the region’s commitment to winter sports. Our region lives sport! Junior competitions are especially important as it is here that the athletes of the future start their careers. I am pleased to see the Olympic heroes of tomorrow. Maybe some of them, in seven years time, will travel the same paths to a medal – and this time an Olympic one“.
