Play for Change and Belgium Pro League invite young people to a ‘fairplay’ day of football
On Saturday 28th May the second edition of Schools Cup will take place at Freethiel Stadium, in Waasland-Beveren, where 280 11-12 year olds will have the opportunity to play football like a professional.
Play for Change (PFC), the charity working across the globe to provide opportunities for children from disadvantaged communities to play, learn and develop, is working hand in hand with Pro League, the top league competition for association football clubs in Belgium, to organise the second annual Schools Cup. This is a football tournament in a professional setting where fair play and solidarity are key themes. All of the teams will be mixed and a Fair Play Award will be presented to the most "fair" team.
PFC and the 16 Pro League clubs will be selecting teams from local schools, social projects and school support programmes who will be representing the professional teams during the one-day event on May 28th, giving children the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a professional footballer.
For this edition, the 16 clubs in the Pro League and defending champion, SK Lierse, will be joined by three teams of refugees who will be representing PFC, who strongly promote social inclusion. The PFC refugee teams will be selected from refugee centres across Belgium, and Pro League and PFC are pleased to collaborate with Fedasil (Federal Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers) to enjoy the day of youth soccer.
Not only do students have the opportunity to experience a game like the pros, wear the colours of their favorite Pro League team, but they will also receive visits from professional players and club representatives to support them during the matches.
The 16 selected teams will compete in a tournament, with the encouragement of their parents, their classmates and their supporters on May 28th at Freethiel of Bevere (Beveren, Stadionplein 1, Beveren).
END.
