Plymouth Signs Three-year Deal to Stage Powerboating Grand Prix
After some speculation regarding the 2003 Class 1 racing calendar Chris Parsonage has confirmed that he has clinched a three-year deal which will keep the spectacular Class 1 British Powerboat Grand Prix in Plymouth until at least 2005. The new contract was signed with the championship's global promoter the International Offshore Team Association (IOTA).
'In my mind there was never really any doubt that the Class 1 British Powerboat Grand Prix would continue to be held in Plymouth,' said local promoter Chris Parsonage. 'It's fantastic news for Plymouth and I am absolutely delighted to have reached this agreement with IOTA because Plymouth is simply the perfect venue for powerboat racing. Plymouth and powerboats are a great partnership.
'We have always maintained that Plymouth has one of the finest natural arenas for watersport events in the world and the teams who race here in Class 1 certainly support our view. We will now be building on the success of events like Class 1 to bring other events to the city. Any event that brings international visitors to the city and promotes the city worldwide has got to be a good thing. Last year the powerboat championship event alone generated millions of pounds of inward investment into the city which is
surely proof enough that the local economy needs events like this.'
The Class 1 British Grand Prix, 25 - 27 July, is round three of the eight race world championship and leading the boats out onto the water for the Pole Position on the Saturday and the Grand Prix on Sunday will be the sports most successful racer, Britain's Steve Curtis. Curtis who in 1985 at the age of 21 was the youngest man to win the world title became the first man to win it four times when he and Bjorn Gjelsten in Spirit of Norway lifted the title in Dubai in 2002. 'Racing at your home Grand Prix is a bit
special and I will be giving it everything to try to repeat last year's win. Winning in Plymouth was a real high point of last season. The crowds were fantastic and the atmosphere was unbelievable.' he said.
