Premier Announces $766,500 Funding For Events Around Queensland

07 Nov 2007

More than $750,000 has been allocated  under the latest funding round of the Queensland Events Regional Development Program (QERDP) for 32 events around Queensland, Premier Anna Bligh today announced.

Ms Bligh said the quality of the events, and the dedication of the organisers to improving their marketing efforts beyond their local regions, were key considerations in awarding the funding amounts.

“The Queensland Events Regional Development Program is committed to extending the economic and social benefits of new and existing events throughout regional Queensland,” Ms Bligh said.

“From the world’s richest student fashion challenge at Townsville to sporting tournaments for older athletes, and the exciting new ‘Hughenden Camel Endurance Challenge’ – it is wonderful to see the interests, passions and hobbies of Queensland’s locals and visitors being catered  for,” she said.

“The funded events have requested support for initiatives ranging from the employment of marketing personnel and the production of advertising and promotional materials, through to hiring infrastructure and facilities to improve the overall visitor experiences at the events.”

“By encouraging and supporting such activities, the QERDP will help these regional events reach their full potential, boosting the spirit of their local  communities and attracting tourists,” Ms Bligh said.

Port Douglas’ iconic ‘Reef and Rainforest Carnivale’ has been awarded $150,000 in Significant Regional Event Scheme funding to grow the event over the next three  years.

Far North Queensland’s newest festival, the Outback Country Rock and Blues event at Undara Experience in the Gulf Savannah, is the first recipient of the Regional Events Innovations Scheme Development Grant.

The Development Grant is offered to new or developing events with potential for growth to assist them in reaching the next level.

In total, 32 events will be funded state-wide under Round 13 of the Queensland Events Regional Development Program. The Queensland Government has invested more than $9.7 million in some 460 events since the program began in 2001.

Queenslanders wanting information about QERDP and the application process can call the secretariat in Townsville on 1300 881 255 or visit http://www.queenslandevents.com.au/

Round 14 will close on 1 February 2008, for projects  being held from 1 July 2008 up to and including 31 December 2009.
