Badminton Defers Difficult Decision over Scoring System
The suspense on the future of badminton’s scoring system is to continue for one more week.
Delegates at the International Badminton Federation’s Annual General Meeting, due to vote on issue today, opted instead for the IBF Council to take the final ruling on 18 May.
The 110 Member Associations represented at the AGM – held at the Convention Hall of the Garden Hotel in Guangzhou, China – were faced initially with four possible options for the future of the scoring system; to adopt 5 x 7 across all events, to adopt an English proposal of 5 x 9 across all events, to vote for a Danish suggestion of 5 x 7 for women’s singles and 5 x 9 across the four other events, or to keep the existing 3 x 15 system.
Representatives from all corners of the globe shared their views, stressing the need for change in badminton to ensure its future growth and eventually the AGM ruled that IBF Council should be empowered to carry out further in-depth analysis and discussion on the possible avenues for change, and its conclusions following a meeting on 18 May would provide the final verdict.
In other AGM news, the rules on International Representation (players switching from one country to another) are to be tightened to fall in line with the International Olympic Committee guidelines after a proposal from the Badminton Association of England was voted in.
As of 1 August 2002, players who wish to change their representation will have to be a passport holder for their new country, and will also have had to wait a minimum of three years after playing for a previous country – an increase of one year, although IBF Council discuss how to handle players who were, before this ruling, already in the process of switching allegiances.
Six new Members were elected to serve on the IBF Council – China’s former world champion Li Lingwei, Puzant Kassabian (BUL), Eraj Wijesinghe (SRI), Heather Nielsen (ENG), Edgar Aglipay (PHI), and Rudy Hartono (INA).
Torsten Berg (DEN), Federico Valdez (PER) and Charoen Wattanasin (THA) were elected Vice-President’s, and Cephas Lar (NGR), Tong Wai Lun (HKG) and Federico Valdez (PER) were selected to be Continental Representatives for Africa, Asia and Pan-America respectively.
