Russian Government to Deliver On Its Promise for Sochi 2014
The Sochi 2014 Bid has aligned the interests of the city, the region and the nation to create the Federal Target Programme (FTP). With US$12 billion of investment guaranteed by the federal government and already underway, the FTP provides for the development and funding for all venues, environmental, transport, technology, accommodation and other essential projects for the 2014 Winter Games, designed to benefit the Olympic family and drive the long-term advancement of Sochi.
During the IOC Evaluation Commission visit to assess the Sochi 2014 Bid, the thirteen-member party has visited a number of Sochi 2014 sites and seen new developments already underway or completed, such as the brand-new gondola ski-lift to Psekakho Ridge – the proposed site of the Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing and Nordic Combined Olympic events – and the international terminal at Sochi International Airport.
Alexander Zhukov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Sochi 2014, said:
“Sochi 2014 will have the greatest number of brand-new venues in Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games history and these will be completed on time and on budget. Our Bid has the unconditional backing of all major political parties in Russia and the guaranteed US$12bn Federal Target Programme to redevelop and regenerate the entire region around Sochi ahead of 2014 is already underway.
These examples of sound and significant commitments are just a fraction of the political and economic backing behind Sochi 2014, but will be far outweighed by the incredible sporting, social, environmental and economic rewards hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will bring to our country.”
Under the FTP, a range of new facilities and infrastructures will be created including sports and entertainment facilities; transport infrastructure and equipment, accommodations projects, upgrade and installation of telecom infrastructure adequate to support the long-term needs of the region and Games technology, environmental programs to protect the spectacular beauty of the region and set standards for environmentally-friendly development, power and water projects, sewage and waste management systems, educational and social programs and medical facilities.
The FTP provides guarantees to the IOC that Sochi can deliver its programs and concept on time and on budget. Under the programme, the city will receive important infrastructure upgrades making it possible to not only host the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games but create a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
