Samsung Becomes Global Partner of International Hockey Federation

Field hockey - 18 Aug 2003

International electronics giant SAMSUNG is to become a global partner of the International Hockey Federation, it was announced 17th August at the Rabobank Hockey Champions Trophy in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

SAMSUNG joins FIH’s founder Global Partners, BDO International and Rabobank, on the four-year programme, which began at the beginning of 2003. Title rights and branding opportunities at all major FIH tournaments will be shared between the three partners, up to and including the Men’s and Women’s World Cups in 2006. The programme has been established such that a final fourth partner may be incorporated into the venture at a later date.

The fastest growing global brand according to Interbrand and the world’s 25th largest brand (Brand Value is US$10.8 Billion), SAMSUNG is famous for global sports sponsorships such as it’s support of the Olympic Games. Other major sports properties that SAMSUNG sponsor include LPGA SAMSUNG World Championship golf tournament, SAMSUNG Super League (Nations Cup) equestrian competition, Asian Games and Olympic Games. Moreover SAMSUNG has been sponsor of global sports stars and teams. Obviously these global sponsorships has helped SAMSUNG to build a strong brand power.

'We are more than happy to be a global partner of the International Hockey Federation', said DongHyun Kim, President of SAMSUNG Electronics Benelux B.V,. 'From this partnership we expect the value of SAMSUNG to increase. Also we’d relish the opportunity to contribute to the flourish of world hockey.'

FIH President Els van Breda Vriesman, commented, 'This is a huge step for the promotion of world hockey. SAMSUNG’s involvement as a Global Partner demonstrates hockey’s ability to attract the backing of major multi-national organisations and, with SAMSUNG’s status as an Olympic Sponsor, also underlines hockey’s strength as an Olympic sport.

Revenue from the Global Partners’ sponsorship will directly benefit host organisers of FIH major events and will also be used by FIH to improve the events’ quality and profile, by enhancing spectator facilities, TV production and youth activities.
