SARS Forces Cancellation of Chinese Slalom World Cup

Canoeing - 07 Apr 2003

The above-mentioned slalom world cup which was scheduled to take place from 14 to 18 May in Guangzhou / province Guangdong. Because of the current events which have been caused by the outbreak of the disease 'Severe acute respiratory syndrome' (SARS) the ICF executive committee has dealt with this topic intensively.

After thorough discussion with the ICF medical committee and consulting the health authorities including the WHO, which advise against travelling to Guangzhou at the moment, the Executive Committee has decided to cancel the slalom world cup in Guangzhou in May 2003. In this situation the ICF cannot take the responsibility for the health of our athletes and coaches as well for as all persons involved.

However, we would like to reserve the possibility of holding this event at a later time in Guangzhou if the situation enables us to do so. We are very pleased about the development of canoeing, particularly canoe slalom in China. Therefore we are dismayed that particularly the planned world cup in May cannot take place because of the mentioned circumstances. At this point we would like to sincerely thank the Chinese federation for their efforts regarding the preparation of this event.

We are very sorry that we have had to make this decision and we appreciate your understanding. As soon as the situation changes we will inform you immediately.
