Second English Basketball Director Resigns
After 30 years as Director of the EBBA, with the responsibility for championships and competitions, Alan Hodgkinson has decided to resign his position from the Executive Board of the English Basketball Association.
In his time on the Executive Board Alan has worked with six chairmen and as Director of Competitions has overseen substantial changes within the National League as it has grown from 80 teams to 300 teams encompassing age groups ranging from 14 up to Senior level. Main responsibilities have included the liaison with the Basketball League and League Manager, Mark Hannen who has managed and administered the National League for 15 years.
This voluntary position elected on a 3 year basis has required enormous commitment and Alan's contribution has been hugely beneficial to the sport.
The National League Committee, succeeded to the Competitions Committee 2 years ago and is made up of elected representatives from National League Clubs and under the guidance of Alan has been instrumental in the restructuring of the National League over the past 12 months.
The insistence on high standards of promotion, playing standard, administration and facilities is one that Alan subscribed to and led.
The resignation allows Alan to engage in the development of England Basketball's new venture - England Basketball Enterprises - free of any conflict of interest that may be perceived. England Basketball Enterprises will not only provide a mail-order opportunity for members and other individuals and organisations but will offer further opportunities of court, goal and equipment hire.
Alan said 'After 30 years of voluntary commitment to an Executive function within the Association I have to thank many people, my fellow Board Members, the members who consistently elected me and more importantly my wife Margaret and 4 children who have been immensely supportive in carrying out this huge voluntary contribution to the development of the sport. I am very excited about the potential for the future with England Basketball Enterprises and this gives us an enormous opportunity to bring further resourcing back to the sport'.
This new company, which was bought by the Association following financial reviews of 2 other companies, is an exciting venture that is greatly needed within the sport of basketball and the services provided by England Basketball Enterprises will be circulated in the coming weeks.
Chairman, Betty Codona, said 'The contribution that Alan has made to the sport is quite often not recognised, his experience and knowledge of the Executive Board has been invaluable through these difficult periods and now we will see his great experience brought to benefit the Association through his contribution in our new groundbreaking commercial venture - England Basketball Enterprises'.
The position of Director Competitions has one year left to run in the current cycle it will be filled on a casual basis by an appointment through the Executive Board for this final year and will be open to election at the Annual General Meeting in September 2001.
