Singapore 2010 Can! Festivals - $300,000 Grant and Event Starter Kit for Youths to Create Action Now for Singapore 2010
A $300,000 Singapore 2010 Young ChangeMakers (YCM) Grant was launched today to encourage youths to come up with initiatives and Create Action Now (CAN!) for Singapore 2010. The Grant is a joint initiative by the National Youth Council (NYC) and Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC).
Youths who come up with interesting concepts and ideas will be able to tap on seed funds of up to $4,000 for each approved project. Non-monetary support and resources such as an event starter kit, offering tips and a list of some resources, will also be available to encourage the community to celebrate Singapore 2010 and the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. SYOGOC and NYC have set aside funds for up to 75 youth-initiated projects.
Mr Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer of SYOGOC said, “Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games is a special event for the youth and by the youth. This is a great opportunity for youths to demonstrate their creative talents and organise events to celebrate Singapore 2010 with the community. I encourage youths to join us in this rare and exciting journey and take up the challenge to Create Action Now! for Singapore 2010.”
Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor for Central Singapore District, and Member of Parliament for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, launched the Singapore 2010 CAN! Festivals and encouraged youths and the community to start celebrating the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games through the four quarterly Singapore 2010 CAN! Festivals from April 2009 to March 2010. Each festival comprises an opening marquee event and a series of youth and community initiated events in celebration of Singapore 2010. Each quarter will have a different theme, with the first being “Culture and Heritage”.
As the opening marquee event of the Singapore 2010 CAN! Festivals, CAN! DISCOVER carried a festival mood with musical performances and a series of booths from six foreign embassies, two international schools and one primary school displaying both international and local culture. There was also an “amazing race” where 306 participants from 29 secondary schools, junior colleges and Institute f Technical Education (ITE) colleges had to visit the newly launched Singapore 2010 youth micro-site, WhyOhGee, to find video clues to move onto the next task in order to complete the race.
*SCAPE VisOut, an interactive visual art installation highlighting youth culture, was also launched at CAN! DISCOVER. Over the next three months, students and members of the public can express their take on youth culture by painting the VisOut acrylic panels displayed at *scape Youth Park. Thereafter, these panels will go on display at various parts of Singapore to showcase this cumulative interpretation of youth culture and vibrancy in Singapore.
