Stage 1 of Olympic Conditioning Takes Place in Santo Domingo!
The 3rd edition of the Meteksan Archery World Cup starts in Santo Domingo from 1-5 April. More than 320 archers from 39 countries have registered to the event and they have two goals: earn points to qualify for the World Cup Final and get ready for the Olympic Games!
The competition in Santo Domingo (DOM) from April 1-5, promises to be interesting. The participation in Recurve Men and Women is truly impressive as some archers start their conditioning for the upcoming Olympic Games. Some countries will also make the last selection of their athletes based on the World Cup results. The best Compound archers will also be competing. Some will look to confirm an excellent 2007 season and some will definitely look for revenge.
Recurve Men
The 2007 World Cup winner, Tsyrempilov (RUS) photo will start his campaign for something even better: an Olympic gold medal. He will have many challengers in Santo Domingo including Kim Ha-Neul (AUS), the winner of the Test Event last year in Beijing. The two athletes from Chinese Taipei, Kuo Cheng Wei and Wang Cheng Pang who dominated the Stage 1 in 2007, will look for the same start of the season. The strong trio from Great Britain (Wills – Terry – Godfrey) will look to continue on their great finish of last season. There will be some talented young guns: Duenas (CAN), Banerjee and Talukdar (IND), Nespoli (ITA), Girouille and Aubert (FRA), Serrano and Velez Sanchez (MEX). The more experienced contenders include Olympic Champion Galiazzo and Di Buo (ITA), Petersson (SWE), Indoor World Champion Rohrberg (GER), Dobrowolski (POL), Stevens (CUB), Van Alten and Custers (NED).
Recurve Women
World Cup winner and new sport star in India, Banerjee, will look to confirm her new status. She will not lack of challengers either. Let’s start with Tsyrempilov’s niece and World Championships bronze medallist Erdyniyeva (RUS). The young Russian also wants to confirm her superb last season. Then there is nonetheless than the World Champion Valeeva (ITA). There is also the golden trio from Poland: Mospinek – Cwienczek – Marcinkiewicz. Finally we will mention the young Tonetta (ITA), Boonen and Hurkmans (NED), Waller (AUS), Laursen (DEN) and the more experienced Schuh (FRA), Folkard (GBR) and Haidn Tschalova (GER).
Compound Men
The Salvadorian hero Jimenez will of course take the short trip to Santo Domingo to start defending his World Cup title. His main opponents from last year will be there: Gellenthien (USA), Dos Santos (BRA) Brasseur (FRA) and Hofer (SUI). The World Champion Trillus (CAN) also plans to shine in the World Cup stages this season. Two great archers are coming back: Reo Wilde and Cousins (USA). The other contenders include Coghlan (AUS), Damsbo (DEN), White (GBR), Pagni (ITA), Elzinga (NED) and Genet (FRA). Probably the best hope for the hosts will be Cadet World Champion in 2006, Goico de Lara (DOM).
Compound Women
Goncharova (RUS) and Van Natta (USA) photo want probably another of their long list of duels for the victory in Santo Domingo. However, the road to the final will not be easy. The list of strong challengers include world’s silver medallist Loginova (RUS), Buden and Zorman (CRO), Soemod (DEN), Markovic (NED), the Ochoa’s sister Almendra and Linda (MEX), Bouillot (FRA), Hansdah (IND), Guedez (VEN), Hunt and Simpson (GBR). Last but not least the Indoor and Outdoor World Champion in 2007, Salvi (ITA)!
The competition will start with a 70-meter Round as qualifications.
