Statement From ICC CWC WI 2007 INC. RE: Hilton Hotel Incident
ICC CWC WI 2007 Inc. can confirm that the members of four teams participating in ICC Cricket World Cup are staying at the hotel. Both the Canada and Ireland squads were in the vicinity of the hotel, and were making their way to practice. As a result, some members of the Canadian team, who were in an elevator, witnessed some effects of the incident but went on to practice as planned.
The South Africa and Pakistan teams were still at the hotel and both teams were swiftly evacuated from the premises according to standard safety regulations. Representatives from all four teams have met with Acting Police Commissioner Glen Roach and been assured of their safety. The law enforcement agencies in Trinidad & Tobago have indicated that the incident was not directed towards any of the teams and additional policing has been put in place on the property.
The safety and security of the players and officials for the tournament is of paramount importance and we continue to work with the appropriate authorities to this end. We thank the local security directorate and police force for their swift and decisive action.
