Telecom Rugby Super 12 Colts competition 'ready to go'
The stars of tomorrow will also be running out on to the pitch when the Telecom Rugby Super 12 kicks off tomorrow. The Telecom Rugby Super 12 2000 Colts competition, which is in its second year, starts with the Hurricanes hosting the Blues at the Westpac Trust Stadium in Wellington on 25 February. New Zealand Rugby Union Manager Professional Rugby Cameron Harland said today that the success of last year's inaugural Colts competition could be measured by the number of players who graduated to this year's Rugby Super 12 squads. "A total of 11 Colts from last year's competition have moved up to the senior ranks," Mr Harland said. "The Colts concept was designed to increase opportunities for younger players and develop a bigger pool of talent available as back up to the main Rugby Super 12 competition. "The numbers of players going on, plus the exciting rugby on display, shows the competition is serving its purpose as a development tool for the New Zealand game." The Colts competition features teams from each of New Zealand's five franchises, playing each other in round robin format. Most of the games will be played as curtain raisers to the main Rugby Super 12 matches.
