Telus Signs $4 Million Partnership with Alpine Canada Alpin
VANCOUVER (B.C.), September 29, 2004 - TELUS and Alpine Canada Alpin (ACA) announced today that they have signed an eight-year, $4 million partnership agreement, boosting the national ski organization’s goal of again making Canada a world-leading alpine ski racing country.
The agreement was announced today at a news conference where Alpine Canada Alpin also detailed a multi-year plan to take the strong steps necessary to capture three or four alpine skiing medals when Canada hosts the Winter Olympics in Vancouver/Whistler.
'With TELUS, we are taking another great leap towards achieving our vision for Canada’s alpine athletes,' says ACA President Ken Read. 'It’s more than a vision – it’s a plan with clear goals designed to make all of Canada proud of its alpine skiers in 2010. TELUS’ support will be instrumental in that plan.'
Rob Cruickshank, TELUS executive vice-president, says TELUS is committed to the long-term development of Canada’s athletes, as demonstrated by the multi-year nature of this partnership, the support of both the Alpine Ski Team and the Disabled Alpine Ski Team, and the multi-year headgear sponsorship of two emerging skiers - Anne-Marie Lefrançois, of Charlesbourg, Quebec and Jeff Hume of Whistler, British Columbia and the entire Disabled Alpine Ski Team.
'TELUS is delighted to put its support behind Alpine Canada Alpin’s bold plan for the sport of skiing in Canada,' Cruickshank says. 'Alpine Canada’s refreshing attitude, belief in excellence and determination to succeed are a winning combination that will make all Canadians proud.'
Alpine Canada Alpin is among the first Canadian sports organizations to implement a multi-year strategy to deliver medals when Canada hosts the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler.
With the plan, annual goals for every aspect of its operations have been established – from coaching to athletic performance, from participation to marketing and fund-raising. In addition to its medal goal, ACA is setting a target of having at least 75 per cent of Canadian results in alpine skiing at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the top 12. With TELUS’ sponsorship plus the support of other corporations, ACA is now only $3 million shy of the amount necessary to fully fund its new plan. Further details about Alpine Canada Alpin’s strategic plan are available at www.canski.org.
TELUS’ sponsorship will support ACA in several areas. TELUS will be the exclusive telecommunications provider to Alpine Canada Alpin and supply services including web hosting and development, wireless services, and management consulting. It will partially fund several events, such as the Men’s World Cup Nov. 27 and 28 and the Women’s World Cup Dec. 3, 4, and 5, both in Lake Louise; and the March 2005 Canadian Championships Events for Disabled. The sponsorship will directly support ACA’s 200-plus development clubs, and the work of coaches and athletes at several levels. Part of that support will come from a $75,000 annual donation towards ACA’s Legacy Project, working in support of both teams. In addition, TELUS will sponsor the headgear of Lefrancois and Hume, two impressive, young national team athletes.
'Every day leading up to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, I set my goals on being the best in the world. Today, the very steep road to the podium became just a little bit easier to climb thanks to TELUS’ support,' said Anne-Marie Lefrançois, a two-time Canadian champion and national team member since 1996.
