Tetley’s Rugby Super League IX Sets All-time Attendance Record
Tetley’s Rugby Super League IX is a record breaker with the competition’s average weekly attendance during the regular season reaching an all time high.
The average weekly attendance at the conclusion of the 28 Rounds stands at 8,570, generated by an aggregate attendance of 1,439,851 supporters.
Those figures are an increase of almost eight per cent on the weekly average and aggregate for the 2003 season (7,955 average. 1,336,376 aggregate).
The 2004 competition has also generated the highest weekly average attendance in Super League history as well as the highest weekly average since the introduction of multiple divisions in 1973.
There has also been a record breaking 61 attendances of 10,000 or more in the 2004 Tetley’s Rugby Super League, smashing the previous best of 50 set last season. This represents an increase of more than 20 per cent. Also over half the clubs in the competition generated at least one attendance of 10,000 plus.
The 2004 season has also created other significant attendance milestones:
Leeds Rhinos have broken the record for best supported club in a Super League season. Their average attendance for 2004 of 16,028 breaks the previous record of 15,163 set by Bradford Bulls in 1997.
The average weekly attendance for the Tetley’s Rugby Super League competition has risen every season since 2001.
Commenting on the figures, the Executive Chairman of the Rugby Football League Richard Lewis said: 'We believe this record breaking Regular season and excellent all round figures are a clear indication of the growing overall quality of the Tetley’s Rugby Super League competition and the constant increase in competitiveness of all clubs.
'We have seen playing standards rise across the board once again and another pleasing factor is the continued emergence of high quality young players who have been developed in the Academies of all Super League clubs.'
Lewis added: 'There has been a tremendous amount of work by member clubs in the areas of marketing, community activity and player production and we will continue to work alongside them to augment and support this so that the sport at this level continues to prosper.
'The Play-Offs are about to begin and as the battle for the Championship enters this final phase, we believe the intensity will increase further to provide even greater levels of sporting excitement and spectacle.
'It wouldn’t be a surprise if more attendance records were broken during this most important part of the season'.
Meanwhile, Richard Lewis also explained that supporters are snapping up seats for the forthcoming Championship decider at Old Trafford.
He said: 'A comparison with the figures for 2003 shows that ticket sales for this year’s Grand Final on Saturday 16th October are already significantly up. So we would urge all supporters who want to be at the most important match of the Tetley’s Rugby Super League season to secure their seats as soon as possible. They shouldn’t forget that last year’s event was a sell out'.
