The 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission Visits China
GENEVA, Switzerland/BEIJING, China/17th March 2009 – An Evaluation Commission appointed by the International Basketball Federation begins today, in Beijing, a tour to visit the three candidate countries interested in organizing the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Men.
China, Italy and Spain are the three countries which are bidding to host the 2014 edition of FIBA’s premier championship.
The three-person 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission, composed by Mr. Borislav Stankovic (FIBA’s Secretary General Emeritus), Mr. Markus Studer (FIBA’s Chief Operating Officer) and Mr. Predrag Bogosavljev (FIBA’s Head of Events), will remain in Beijing from today until next Friday, March 20th.
The agenda of this week’s meetings in China includes several operational meetings (on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday evening), the checking of all arenas/venues and proposed hotels in Beijing (all day on Wednesday), and a presentation by the other Chinese cities which are potentially interested in hosting preliminary round games (on Thursday).
During its visit to Beijing, the Evaluation Commission will meet, among other Chinese sport and political authorities, with Mr. YU Zaiqing who, in addition of being President of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), holds the positions of IOC Vice-President, Vice-President of the Chinese National Olympic Committee and is also a FIBA Central Board member, and Mr. LIU Jingmin, Vice-Mayor of Beijing and former Executive Vice-President of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG).
After returning from China, the Evaluation Commission will visit Spain, from 23rd to 27th March, and Italy, from 30th March to 3rd April.
Once the trips to China, Spain and Italy have been completed and all aspects of the three bids have been carefully revised and all commitments assessed, the 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission will prepare in-depth reports which will be brought forward to the FIBA Central Board members. Then, on 23rd May 2009, at its meeting in Geneva, the FIBA Central Board will decide on the host of the 2014 World Championship for Men.
