The BWF World Badminton Championships 2014 Go to Denmark

Badminton - 09 Dec 2011

We succeeded! After several years of well-prepared bidding, focusing on the opportunity of staging not only a World Championship, but also a true badminton festival, Denmark succeeded in winning the hosting of the BWF World Badminton Championships 2014.

Friday 9 December the Badminton World Federation awarded the BWF World Championships 2014 to Denmark. The decision was made on the Council meeting in Queenstown, New Zealand.

Over the past few years, Badminton Denmark, Sport Event Denmark and Wonderful Copenhagen have joined forces and worked hard to attract this huge tournament in fierce competition first South Korea, China, Holland and Macau. In the final Denmark faced the strong Asian opponents from China and Macau.

The decision was welcomed with great excitement by the Danish delegation in New Zealand consisting of representatives from Badminton Denmark and Sport Event Denmark.

”I am very proud! Denmark continues the fine line of major and significant international sports events on Danish soil – just think of the impressing UCI Road World Championships 2½ months ago – this is a result of working innovatively, professionally and working together. This makes the big difference in a world of increasing global competition in bitting for sports events,” says Lars Lundov, CEO, Sport Event Denmark and adds: “BWF World Championships 2014 will be a great event. Badminton Denmark has over many years made world class athletes that can put on a fantastic sports show for everyone watching. Furthermore the federation is very experienced and professional.”

The crown jewel of badminton

Badminton Danmark shares this excitement. The CEO of Badminton Danmark, Charlotte Malmroes, is pleased that the Danish players now get the opportunity to play on home ground.

“The World Championship is the number one badminton event and it clearly overshadows all the others. The world’s best players are arriving in Copenhagen and on behalf of Badminton Denmark I am very proud to get the opportunity of staging such a great event. To play on home ground is the best possible platform for our players to win the prestigious World Championships medals. I am convinced that the home ground advantage will act as a leverage for the entire Danish badminton community. I would like to thank Sport Event Denmark, The Municipality of Ballerup and Wonderful Copenhagen for the unique teamwork.

Badminton Denmark and the City of Copenhagen joint hosts for the BWF World Badminton Championships 2014:

Frank Jensen, Lord Mayor of the City of Copenhagen adds: “This great event gives us the opportunity to continue the folk festival that we all enjoyed at the recent UCI Road World Championships 2011 in Copenhagen. This underlines that Copenhagen is a city where event owners choose to stage their major, international events. Since Copenhagen hosted the BWF World Badminton Championships in 1991, the city has undergone a complete make-over and I am proud to show it to all the visiting spectators, fans and players, but also to offer the local citizens top class badminton live as I’m pleased to invite the Copenhageners to a world class sports event”.

Copenhagen in August 2014 is the place to be If you want to see the greatest badminton event of them all.
