The European Tour Sport Relief Challenge
The European Tour Sport Relief Challenge 2006 will take place at the BMW Championship at Wentworth Club on May 25-28 and The Barclays Scottish Open at Loch Lomond on July 13-16. All four days of both events on The European Tour International Schedule are being televised by BBC Sport.
Title sponsors BMW and Barclays, and Tournament host venues Wentworth Club and Loch Lomond, have pledged their support with The European Tour to Sport Relief 2006.
Sport Relief is brought to you by Comic Relief, in association with BBC Sport, and brings the worlds of sport and entertainment together to raise much needed cash to help vulnerable people leading tough lives here at home in the UK, and in the poorest countries in the world. Since it's launch in 2002 it has raised over £30 million.
Since 2002 The European Tour Sport Relief Challenge has raised £77,692 and the objective for 2006 is to take this sum in excess of £100,000. The mechanism for raising the money will see the sponsor, the venue and the Tour each donate £250 per shot for the lowest score to par in every round. For instance, Paul McGinley's second round eight under par 64 in last year's BMW
Championship would have earned a total of £6,000 on that day alone for Sport Relief (8 x £750) through donations from BMW, Wentworth Club and The European Tour.
George O'Grady, Executive Director of The European Tour, said: "Our Members have made supporting charity a major element in The European Tour's daily business and we are delighted to once again provide significant support to Sport Relief. We thank BMW, Barclays, Wentworth Club and Loch Lomond for coming on board to sustain this special fund in conjunction with our friends
and partners at BBC Sport."
The nation is limbering up for the return of Sport Relief on Saturday July 15th - and it promises to be an unforgettable day. A sea of people, including many famous faces, will be Going the Extra Mile on Sport Relief Saturday at events taking place in every nook and cranny of the UK, the extravaganza will culminate with a special night of BBC ONE TV.
