The Presidents Cup Comes to Canada in 2007

Golf - 16 Aug 2005

(Montreal, Quebec, Canada) —  It was announced today by PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem that the 2007 Presidents Cup will be contested September 18-23 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club.

“We are delighted to bring The Presidents Cup to Canada,” said  PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “Since its inception in 1994, we have believed that staging the event internationally extends our philosophy of bringing golf to diverse and multi-cultural audiences around the world. Much like what we witnessed in Australia in 1998 and in South Africa in 2003, we hope that hosting The Presidents Cup in 2007 will be a catalyst for the continued growth of the game in Canada.”

"Canada looks forward to welcoming the best golfers in the world to our country in 2007 for The Presidents Cup," said Prime Minister Paul Martin.

"The Government of Canada is proud to be associated with the PGA TOUR for a competition that will attract golf enthusiasts to the great city of Montreal."

“This is a landmark day for golf in Canada.” said Stephen D. Ross, Executive Director of the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA). “The Presidents Cup is one of the most prestigious international events and our country is truly honoured to be selected as host. We thank the PGA TOUR and Royal Montreal Golf Club for their dedicated efforts. Their commitment positions our country as a premier golfing nation and will help us shape golf’s future in Canada.”

"We are pleased and proud to have been selected as the host club for such a prestigious international event. We look forward to welcoming the best golfers in the world to Royal Montreal in 2007," said Michael L. Roberts, 2007 Tournament Chairman and a member of The Royal Montreal Golf Club.

The United States has won three of the first five Presidents Cups.

The  sixth Presidents Cup will be contested Sept. 20-25, 2005 at the Robert Trent  Jones Golf Club in Prince William County, VA. Both Jack Nicklaus and Gary  Player  return  as  Captains  of  the United States and International Teams,  respectively.  The  2003  Presidents Cup in South Africa ended in a 17-17  tie  after  both  teams  decided  to  share  the  Cup  in  a show of sportsmanship.

The 2007 event will mark the seventh playing of The Presidents Cup, and the third time it has been contested outside the United States. The 1998 Presidents Cup was held at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia and the 2003 event was held at the Gary Player-designed Links Course on the Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in George, South Africa.

The event will feature many of the world's best golfers with 12 representing the United States and 12 making up the International Team of players from around the world, excluding Europe, in team match-play competition.
