Three Bid to Host Sleddog World Championships
At its 9th General Assembly congress in St-Sauveur, Quebec Canada, September 27-30, 2002, IFSS elected a new Council. Elected as president was Tim White of USA. Snorre Naess of Norway was elected as vice president. Izabella Szmurlo of Poland, Sara Vanderwood of USA, Judy Pearce of Canada, Christian Cleve-Hansen of Norway, and Pep Parés from Spain were elected to the IFSS Council as directors-at-large. Lars Svanfeldt, Sweden, representing Europe; Lee Eberle, USA, representing North America; and Jack Harkness of South
Africa, representing otherwise unaffiliated federations in South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Japan, had been recently elected as Continental Directors to the Council.
The General Assembly concluded its round of business on Sunday, including the adoption of a new by-law to include within IFSS the addition to the Council of a new director to represent the interests of breed-specific sled dog competitors. On Monday the new Council signed the final contractual agreement with the Trail Club of Europe (TCE) to host the 2003 IFSS World Championship Race in Germany in
February.
Presentations to host the 2005 World Championships were made by Dawson City, Yukon Territories Canada; Atta Boy Sled Dog Committee, Bend, Oregon USA; and the village of St-Sauveur, Quebec Canada. The bidding for the 2005 World
Championships was highlighted by banquets hosted by the City of Dawson and the Atta Boy Committee. The St-Sauveur group gave a cocktail party. In the end, the Council chose to have the Sprint, Nordic, and Junior World Championships in Dawson City, Yukon Canada, and the Distance events at the Bend, Oregon USA site.
The new Council also worked on strategic planning for activities for the next two years. These included ideas to initiate a campaign to bring to the attention of the IOC (International Olympic Committee) the desire of mushing fans throughout the world to see their sport recognized by this prestigious body. Other two-year goals are:
the promotion of dryland or off-snow events and Nordic style (skijoring and pulka),
support for the expansion of the sport in South America,
further development of equipment to allow for physically disabled individuals to participate in the sport,
help to National Federations to plan for building permanent or dedicated trails for sled dog activities in their areas, and
the development of a comprehensive program for junior mushers.
