Three Cities Bid to Host 2007 World Conference
Montreal, 8 November, 2005 – The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announced today that three cities have submitted formal bids to host the 2007 World Conference on Doping in Sport. These cities are: Bangkok, Thailand; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and Madrid, Spain.
At its meeting in May, WADA’s Executive Committee approved the publication of a call for expressions of interest to host the 2007 Conference. The Committee recognized the Conference as an important opportunity to assess the status of the fight against doping following the implementation of the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Convention against Doping in Sport, and to identify the next steps that should be taken.
“We are very pleased with the interest generated by this important event in the fight against doping,” said David Howman, WADA’s Director General. “Many cities and countries contacted us to informally express their interest, and three of them have formalized their bid. I would like to thank all of them—the three finalists in particular—for the quality of their submissions.”
This Conference will be the third World Conference on Doping in Sport. The first one, organized by the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1999, resulted in the Lausanne Declaration, the document that led to the creation of WADA. The second one, held by WADA in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2003, gathered more than 1200 representatives of national governments, related public authorities, the Olympic Movement, other sports governing bodies, athletes, and expert groups to discuss, review, and agree to a harmonized global policy, the World Anti-Doping Code.
WADA’s administration will now submit a summary report of the bids to the members of its Executive Committee and Foundation Board. WADA’s Executive Committee will make a recommendation on November 20 to the Agency’s Foundation Board, which will select the host city during its meeting the next day in Montreal.
