Tokyo "absolutely thrilled" to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Olympics - 08 Sep 2013

Buenos Aires, 7 September 2013 –The Tokyo 2020 Press Office issues the following statements following the announcement that Tokyo has been selected as the host city for the Games of the XXXII Olympiad.

IOC Member and President of both Tokyo 2020 and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) Tsunekazu Takeda:
"Tokyo is honoured and humbled by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to award us the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is with an incredible sense of excitement that we express our thanks to the IOC members and the wider International Sports Movement. The Olympic Family has put its faith in our great city to deliver the memorable Games we have promised, and we will not let them down. With no doubt, this will be a memorable event for the every member of the Olympic Family, every athlete and every spectator.

"I would like to commend both Istanbul and Madrid for their exceptional campaigns, which were truly a wonderful reflection on the Olympic Movement and their respective nations. We have enjoyed a healthy rivalry, constantly united under the Olympic Values of Excellence, Respect, and Friendship.

"The most recent public polls revealed that 92 per cent of the Japanese population supported Tokyo’s hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games, so I am confident that 116million Japanese people are smiling right now. We thank each one of those individuals for their support of Tokyo 2020 throughout this extraordinary two-year journey. In addition, we extend our deep appreciation to everyone involved with the Bid, including Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe; Governor of Tokyo Naoki Inose; and our devoted ambassadors and athlete supporters.

"Tokyo is eager to begin to put in place our plans for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Tokyo 2020 will be a superb occasion in the very heart of our dynamic capital city. We take on this immense responsibility both humbly and seriously, and will work hard over the next seven years to organise and host what is sure to be the world’s greatest event in 2020."

Naoki Inose, Chairman of Tokyo 2020 and Governor of Tokyo:
"Tokyo thanks the members of the International Olympic Committee for their support of Tokyo. We are very honoured and proud that Tokyo, Japan, has been awarded to host the world’s biggest and greatest sports event, the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Allow me to express our respect to the cities of Madrid and Istanbul for having raced in this bid campaign together and, with a spirit of healthy competition, encouraged the delivery of quality plans.

"Here in Buenos Aires, we have received many voices of support and felt the passion from people in Japan.I am overjoyed to learn that our dream has come true.

"We'd like to sincerely thank not only residents of Tokyo and citizens across Japan, but also Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Japan's government officials -the national parliament, the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly, local governments -our business and sports communities, and every single individual who supported Tokyo.Thank you very much indeed.

"By hosting the 2020 Tokyo Games, we will create “hope”. We will offer dreams and hope to future generations, and our hosting of the Games will accelerate the recovery of Japan’s tsunami-affected area. We will promote the Olympic Movement globally in an effort to create a “peaceful and better world”. Tokyo will bean environment where athletes can perform at their best, and we will offer guests from every corner of the world our excellent hospitality.

"Throughout the next seven years, our “Team Japan” will thoroughly carry out our delivery plan. To draw on a sporting analogy: we will continue “training” in order to make the Tokyo 2020 Games the “best Games ever. ”We appreciate your continuous support."
