Top Japanese Athletes Unite to Launch Earthquake Aid Fund via JustGiving
A squad of Japan’s top athletes from a range of sports has launched a fund in aid of the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated north-eastern parts of Japan last week.
The fund is raising money to help the victims through JustGiving, the online charity platform.
Led by Japan's track superstar Dai Tamesue, twice a bronze medal winner in the 400-metres hurdles at athletics’ IAAF World Championships, the charity project ‘Team Japan’ was launched on March 13 via JustGiving.jp.
By 8 a.m. today, Japanese time, the online charity team had already raised Y17,925,800 ($227,000), with Tamesue having personally raised Y6,370,900.
Tamesue said: “It breaks my heart that I cannot be there to help the people who are enduring hardship. I am currently in San Diego but this devastating crisis has made me realize how much my heart is with the people of Japan. As athletes, we never give up. That is how we play our game. I have confidence that Japan will never give up. We have the strength to overcome this tragedy.”
All of the funds raised go to a not-for-profit organisation Civic Force (http://civic-force.org/english/index.html).
