Transatlantic Windsurf Race Announces Title Sponsor - Petrobras To Support The Ultimate Windsurfing Adventure
SSM Freesports today announced a title sponsor for the TransAtlantic Windsurf Race 2000. Petrobras, the largest and most successful petroleum company in Brazil, have secured title rights for the race which is now known as, the Petrobras TransAtlantic Windsurf Race 2000, Algarve - Canarias - Ceara.
Petrobras is a well known international sponsor having also recently secured sponsorship rights to next weekend's Brazilian round of the Formula 1 Grand Prix Championship.
The start of the Petrobras TransAtlantic Windsurf Race 2000, Algarve - Canarias - Ceara will be at noon on the 25th March, when an international feet of windsurfers will leave the beautiful natural surroundings of Sagres, Algarve bound for Ceara, Brazil.
They will have several refuelling stops along the route and an overnight stop in the Canaries, a well-established and hugely popular European windsurfing venue, boasting two events on the Professional Windsurfers Association world tour.
The TransAtlantic windsurfers, supported by a fleet of purpose built 30ft rigid inflatable boats, or RIBS, on which they will live for the duration of the race, will sail the 3,000 nautical miles to Brazil in around 16 days at an average of 200 miles per days.
The punishing schedule is sure to test even the fittest sailors and it's for this very reason that the race has been called the 'Paris-Dakar de la Mer'. It's going to be the ultimate windsurfing challenge and teamwork will be all-important.
The 'pilot' TransAtlantic Windsurf Race took place in 1998 (Canada-England) and gave the race organisers expert knowledge on the endurance needed to plan and complete the challenge.
The Petrobras TransAtlantic Windsurf Race 2000, Algarve - Canarias - Ceara is also supported by the Brazilian Federal Government which has selected the race to kick start their 500th anniversary celebrations.
RACE ROUTE Stage 1/ Algarve - Canaries (650nm approx)
Stage 2/ Canaries - Cape Verde (850nm approx)
Stage 3/ Cape Verde - Ceara (1500nm approx)
