Tweet Your Maglia Rosa

Cycling - 05 Sep 2011

A world-first initiative that brings together fans of the Giro d’Italia on Twitter and Facebook to the "heart" of the champions that will wear the Maglia Rosa in 2012

Ivan Basso, winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2010, is the first champion to tweet

Friedrichshafen, 1st September 2011 - Twitter has built its success on the possibility of bringing famous people from many different industries to their fans, but this time it will do much more: the tweets of the fans of the Giro d’Italia will transfer strenght to those who will wear the symbol of leadership at the next Corsa Rosa.

In 2012 the Maglia Rosa will transfer to all the riders who will wear it a support that they would never have thought of: a feeling that will come, via Twitter, from the fans who will share their passion for this landmark of history, courage and success in sports. Their tweets will be printed inside the 2012 Maglia Rosa and the best one will be placed on the collar.

Ivan Basso, winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2010, is the first champion who tweeted his thoughts: “The first one is emotion, the second one is glory, the third is… a dream”.

It is a world-first initiative: never before have the sports fans been able to convey messages of encouragement through the social networks, and watch them printed eventually on technical sport clothing worn by the greatest champions.

The project, launched today with a tweet on the Giro d’Italia official profile - www.twitter.com/giroditalia - was presented to the media at Eurobike, the leading European trade fair specialising in the field of cycling, held in Friedrichshafen (Germany). The event was hosted by Santini, established partner of the Giro d’Italia for the design and production of the Maglia Rosa and of the Winners’ Jerseys of the Corsa Rosa.

From now until 15th September 2011, followers of the Giro can tweet a 140 characters message, by using the official hashtag #Magliarosa, in which they describe the meaning that the Maglia Rosa has for fans, and encourage the champions who will wear it in 2012.

A selection of 100 tweets will be made, divided according to geographical origin, which will be submitted eventually for evaluation by the fans of the Giro d’Italia on Facebook - www.facebook.com / giroditalia. They will then choose the 10 best tweets, worthy of being printed on the 2012 Maglia Rosa.

Tweets printed on the 2012 Maglia Rosa will be 20 in total, 10 of which will come from many cycling stars who have worn the Giro d’Italia leader's jersey in their careers. Their enthusiastic acceptance reflects how increasingly widespread and very popular Twitter is in the world of cycling, not only among fans but also among professionals of this sport.

To complete, until 5th September, Facebook friends of the Giro d’Italia will be asked to determine the design of the Maglia Rosa 2012 by choosing among three layouts.

Through these projects, RCS Sport - La Gazzetta dello Sport, organisers of the Giro d’Italia, aim at showing that is possible to combine the past and the history of a symbol as the Maglia Rosa, with the present and the future of communications represented by the web and the social networks, to create closer links between the Giro d’Italia and its many fans, through innovative and interactive global media.
