Two World Records broken at the CGU Indoor Grand Prix
The CGU Indoor Grand Prix, held yesterday in Birmingham's National Indoor Arena, proved to be the most exciting and important event in the Indoor season so far. Doubling up as the Final of the prestigious Ricoh Tour, tickets had been sold out for more than a week in advance. Two of the three expected records were broken. The first by Ethiopian Haylu Mekkonen (Haile Gebrselassie's training partner) in the 2 miles, breaking a record that had stood since 1973, and the second by Wilson Kipketer in the 1000m. Both runners were given a cheque for US$50,000. Despite the fantastic encouragement from the crowd, Gabriela Szabo narrowly missed breaking the 3000m world record by only 2 seconds.
