Paralympics - 25 Apr 2007

Beijing, China – Today, the final session of the 46th International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board (GB) concluded after three days of meetings in Beijing, China.

The Beijing 2008 Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (BOCOG) presented its latest updates for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games in various areas, including Accessibility, Transport, Accommodation, Ticketing and Venue Services.

During a venue tour, the GB members examined the progress being made by BOCOG for key venues, including the Main Stadium (Bird’s Nest), the Aquatic Centre (Water Cube) and the Paralympic Village.

“I am very delighted with the past days of meetings. The Governing Board had some fruitful discussions on various topics. We are particularly impressed with the exciting progress being made for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and we are confident that these will be marvellous Games in 2008”, said IPC President Sir Philip Craven.

At the meeting, the GB received updates on the work of various IPC Standing Committees and Councils, was informed on the progress of the IPC Classification Code and International Standards, was debriefed of the Torino 2006 Winter Paralympics via video conference from the Torino 2006 Organizing Committee (ComParto), as well as adopted a new Development Policy.

The GB also approved membership relation issues, including the granting of provisional membership, received an update on the budget 2007 as well as approved the framework of the budget for the Financial Year 2008-2009, which will be the basis for developing a more detailed budget to be approved by the IPC General Assembly in November 2007.

Furthermore, in compliance with the new IPC Sports Governance and Management Initiative, Chairpersons for IPC Sports Technical Committees (STCs) were appointed and the further selection process for other positions within the STCs was endorsed.

The next Governing Board Meeting will take place in August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before the Rio 2007 Parapan American Games.
