UK Rugby League Clubs Could Appoint Board of Directors

Rugby league - 01 Aug 2001

At their meeting on Wednesday 8th August at Halifax, the 12 member clubs in the Tetley’s Super League are to discuss the principle of putting in place an independent Board of Directors, following a proposal from the London Broncos club.

At present the Board of Directors of Super League (Europe) Limited consists of 4 people who are involved with Tetley’s Super League clubs – (Chris Caisley (Chairman of Bradford Bulls), Gary Hetherington (Leeds Rhinos), Shane Richardson (Hull FC), Tim Adams (Huddersfield Giants)) - and one independent (Nigel Wood, no club affiliation).

Commenting on the proposal, Chairman of Super League (Europe) Limited Chris Caisley said: 'As many people are aware, I have always believed it is entirely right that Directors of Super League (Europe) should have no club affiliation and I therefore would support the London proposal. I hope my fellow Directors will do likewise.

Caisley added, 'I believe the time is right for this key development. The Tetley’s Super League competition has reached a point where it boasts playing standards at an all time high, a hugely successful Play-Off series, an excellent portfolio of broadcast partners and superb backing from our major sponsors Carlsberg-Tetley.

'The creation of an independent Board would be a hugely positive step which would give the competition a great platform to build further progress.'

Chris Caisley also believes that discussions between Tetley’s Super League clubs will lead to a recommendation that the Board of Directors of the Rugby Football League should consist of people with no club affiliation. At present, Caisley himself serves on this Board as Deputy Chairman of the RFL.

In addition, Chris Caisley regards it as vital that issues such as cross ownership of clubs and other potential conflicts of interest are addressed by Super League (Europe) Limited.

He commented, 'It is important that the governance of Rugby League is not only carried out to the highest possible standards but is also seen to be done in this way by all stakeholders and supporters of the sport.

'It has to be wrong that any person with a financial or other controlling interest in once club has either by themselves or a connected person an interest in or control over another club.

'Another area of conflict concerns our relations with rugby union. It was recently reported that Leicester Tigers had considered applying for membership of Super League. If that had come to pass we would have surely had to examine putting in place safeguards to ensure that the any such franchise was run for the benefit of Rugby League.'

He added, 'Also there maybe other areas of conflict which ought to be addressed in order to create complete transparency within the sport.'
