Umbro Signs Five Major European Soccer Sponsorship Deals
Following hot on the heels of the sell-out success story of UMBRO’s new England reversible away jersey and in the wake of World Cup 2002, the football brand is revealing a number of exciting new long-term international sponsorship deals.
The international team of Sweden; Turkish national champions Galatasaray SK; current French national champions Olympique Lyonnais; Italian Serie A team Brescia and RCD Espanyol from Spain’s Primera Liga will all shortly be benefiting from UMBRO’s performance sportswear.
In an exciting new partnership, the Swedish national football team will be kitted out by the brand. The long-term agreement with the Swedish Football Association (SFA), beginning in 2003, will involve a close partnership with UMBRO which is intended to benefit Swedish football as a whole.
The six-year agreement, reached between Seger United AB (part of New Wave Group AB (publ) and responsible under licence in Sweden for the UMBRO brand) and the SFA will see the Swedish national teams use UMBRO sportswear and equipment at every level from until at least 2008.
UMBRO has also signed a deal to become the new technical sponsor of the Turkey’s record-breaking champions, Galatasaray SK. The professional team, as well as six junior teams of the most successful club in Turkey, will wear UMBRO playing and training products in a partnership running from June 2002 through to 2004.
The contract was negotiated through Galatasaray’s marketing partner SPORTFIVE and signed with Galatasaray Sportif A.S., the commercial arm holding all the media and marketing rights of Galatasaray SK. The sponsorship package will be handled through OMEGA SPORT SA, UMBRO's exclusive distributor in Greece and METCO AS, exclusive representative of UMBRO in Turkey.
NOEL SOCCER, the French licensee of the UMBRO brand, has won a five year contract to supply all playing and training equipment to the current French Champions, Olympique Lyonnais. UMBRO will supply the playing kit, training wear, footballs and accessories to the club, to be used by the teams and technical staff.
UMBRO, in conjunction with Formula Sport Group (the brand’s Italian licensee) has also secured a new three-year technical sponsorship agreement with Italian Serie A club Brescia. The brand will supply the club with all training and playing product for the 2002-03 season, and with footballs from the 2003-04 season.
Primera Liga club RCD Espanyol has also signed a new technical sponsorship deal with UMBRO, adding to the brand’s strong presence in Spain. (Celta Vigo, Malaga, Alaves, Real Valladolid )
