United Nations Climate Change Conference FIM Ride Green Eco Enduro: French and Danish triumph concludes the Danish Year of Sport 2009
The French Enduro champion, Fabien Planet was the best in the forest-stages, but it was the only 19-year-old Dane, Stefan K. Olsen, who triumphed in the Super Finals, as the world's first Enduro race for electrical motorcycles with great sporting and media success ended Sunday afternoon at Svanemoellen kaserne in Copenhagen.
The race, which consisted of a total of 9 forest stages and a separate super-final, was attended by a number of international star names, including the 5-time motocross world champion, Belgian Joël Smets. But for Smets it was difficult to cope with not only forest-winner Fabien Planet, but also the Dutchman Advocaat Amel ending 2nd and not least Dane Kasper Lynggaard. Smets had to be satisfied with a 4th place, one point after Lynggaard, who lost the chain on his electrical Quantya motorcycle on one of the stages and thus lacked one result in the overall standing.
Joël Smets said:
“This is fantastic. I really believe in the possibilities of riding electric and I definitely want to come back next time, if there will be one! “
The Super-Final at Svanemoellen Kaserne in the central Copenhagen consisted of a series of "speedway-style” heats, which ended with a finale. No fewer than three Danes had qualified for the finale - but not because they in some way had a home advantage, the track was built for purpose and nobody had a chance to practice beforehand. The only foreigner who reached the finale was Joël Smets.
The competition in final heats was extremely hard and it was Stefan K. Olsen, who managed to beat the 5-times world champion. Smets, however, scored 2nd space, while the Danish Super motard champion Mikkel Caprani was 3rd. Last man in the finale was the best Danish World Cup motocross rider in recent times, Brian Jorgensen, who is also the coach of the Danish motocross team within the Danish Motor Union.
During FIM Ride Green Eco Enduro the female participants also classified separately and it was on the forest stages the Swedish Enduro champion Vanja Kollmann, who ran with palms while her compatriot, the former cross-country World Champion Annie Seel won the super-finale.
FIM Ride Green Eco Enduro had in the period up to event achieved tremendous international attention. Top officials from the United Nations used the break day during the UN Climate Change Conference, COP15, to watch zero-polluting quiet motor racing and the event was also visited by delegates from the international motorcycling federation, Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and the European Motorcycle Union. A range of international media, covered the Danish climate event, knowing that there was written seminal motorsport history - something which after all does not belong to everyday life in Denmark.
There was from all sides nothing but praise of the Danish event. It was from several sides noticed that Denmark with FIM Enduro Ride Green Eco had overtaken the development because the organizers with Ivan Reedtz-Thott, Soren Clauding and DMU in the lead had demonstrated that it was possible not only to talk about climate, but also possible to show the way for actively to do something about it.
