Volleyball's World Club Championship set for 2003 Debut
FIVB, the world's governing body for the sport of volleyball has given the green light for the proposed World Club Championship, the first edition of which is tentatively set for 2003.
In consultation with Mr. Roberto Ghiretti, who heads the FIVB World Club Championship Coordination Committee, the Sports Events Council agreed to make every effort to get the new competition format (for both men and women) up and running in October 2003. Mr. Ghiretti, of Italy, is also a member of the FIVB Sports Events Council.
'Quality must be the final element,' FIVB President Dr. Rubén Acosta told the Council. 'We must work hard to make it possible in 2003.'
Eight club teams will compete for the World Club Championship - one host team club, five club teams - one from each continent and two wild card entries (nominated by the FIVB in conjunction with the Host TV Broadcaster and event organizer).
The Sports Events Council is charged, among other tasks, to set up and coordinate the extended calendar of international volleyball competitions for presentation to the FIVB Board of Administration.
The Council, under the chairmanship of President Acosta and comprising representatives from Continental Confederations, National Federations, national leagues and other nominated members, held its inaugural meeting at the FIVB Swiss headquarters May 1-2. It is intended that the Council will also include player's representatives.
