Wakeboard World Championships 2015 set for Cancun in Mexico announces US$50,000 cash purse for first time

Waterskiing - 08 Oct 2015

In just three weeks from now, over 200 Wakeboard riders from 29 countries will arrive at the spectacular new Mayan Watersports Complex in Cancun, Mexico. They will compete in the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation’s (IWWF) 2015 Wakeboard World Championships which will take place on October 27/31

Held every two years, this will be one of the biggest international Wakeboard events on the international calendar. For the first time, Mexico will host these championships. Previous IWWF Wakeboard World Championships have taken place in France, Republic of South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Spain, Russia, Qatar, Italy, and twice in the Republic of Korea.

The newly-created Mayan Watersports Complex in Cancun gives Mexico a significant additional tourist and sports attraction reflecting the global boom in Wakeboard popularity. It includes two full-sized wakeboard cableways, lakes for boat wakeboard and waterski, fly-jet, wakesurf, wakeskate, a super-slider, motocross and horseback riding. With over 300 hotels in the general area including a variety of major popular beachside hotels, this is a perfect venue for these IWWF Wakeboard World Championships.

For the first time at an IWWF World-titled event, a cash purse will be available for Open Riders totaling US$50,000.

Riders who compete in the 2015 IWWF World Wakeboard Championships in Cancun will have an extra bonus. They may later be considered for invitation to the 2016 and 2017 IWWF Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup Series. This provides US$95,000 cash prizes, travel subsidies and hotel accommodation for contestants.  There have been 45 Stops in this IWWF Series to date.

The latest 2016 MasterCraft X-Star boat will tow this year’s World Championships. MasterCraft are also the official Waterski & Wakeboard World Cup Series boat providers.

At the previous IWWF Wakeboard World Championships held in 2013 in the Republic of Korea, Australia won the team overall gold medal. Raimi Merritt (USA) captured the Open Women’s category and Harley Clifford (AUS) the Open Men’s category. Both defending Wakeboard World Champions will be hot favourites to retain their coveted titles this year but with rising competition standards worldwide, this will be a tougher challenge than ever.
