Where and How the Olympic Traffic Lanes Will Operate

Olympics - 26 Jul 2004

The Olympic Traffic Lanes (OTC) are traffic lanes on the Olympic Road Network (ORN) in which, only accredited vehicles associated with the Olympic Games are allowed.
Any vehicle in possession of a valid Vehicle Access and Parking Permit issued by ATHENS 2004 is considered accredited.

The aim of the Olympic Traffic Lanes is that there shall be safe and speedy passage for vehicles carrying members of the Olympic Family and for the special buses carrying spectators and Games staff to and from the Olympic Competition Venues.

It should be noted that for the most part, Olympic Lanes are assigned to the furthest left lane of the road and are not the same as the OASA bus lanes.

Buses on OASA routes, which are not Olympic routes, and also ILPAP trolleybuses, will use the Olympic Bus Lanes only where the two lanes coincide.

We repeat: the only vehicles permitted to use the Olympic Traffic Lanes are those in possession of a valid Vehicle Access and Parking Permit issued by ATHENS 2004. These are:

  • Passenger vehicles and buses carrying members of the Olympic Family

  • Buses carrying spectators on Olympic Bus Routes

  • Company vehicles from ATHENS 2004 and from other agencies involved with the Olympic Games, possessing the proper permit

  • All emergency vehicles (e.g. police cars, ambulances, etc.). Emergency vehicles do not need a Vehicle Access and Parking Permit.

  • Buses on existing city urban routes will use an Olympic Lane only where the latter is on the right side of the road and coincides with a street.

The following are not permitted to use the Olympic Traffic Lanes:

  • Private vehicles without a valid Vehicle Access and Parking Permit (VAPP).

  • Private vehicles belonging to residents or businesses in Venue areas (whether or not they are in possession of a TCZ access permit).

  • Motorcycles and mopeds without a Vehicle Access and Parking Permit

  • Public buses on ordinary routes (except where the Olympic Traffic Lane is the right lane of the road)

  • Supply vehicles and any type of trucks, if over the permitted maximum weight of 2.3 tonnes (whether or not they are accredited)
