Bundesliga seals third rights deal in Asia for new cycle with Indonesia's Mola TV

Soccer - 06 Aug 2020
Author: Jonathan Rest

Mola TV, the pay-television and over-the-top platform in Indonesia, has acquired exclusive rights to German soccer's Bundesliga for the next five seasons.

The inventory includes all 306 Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga games each season to 2024-25, live streaming of the DFL Supercup and relegation play-off matches.

The 2020-21 season kicks-off in mid-September.

In addition to the live action, there will be a range of shoulder programming, such as highlights and magazine shows, Bundesliga International, the league's worldwide commercial rights sales arm, said today.

Mola TV will be able to exploit the rights across cable, pay-TV, free-to-air terrestrial television and IPTV, as well as video-on-demand and OTT services.

The Bundesliga has been shown in Indonesia in recent seasons by Fox Sports, as part of the international broadcaster's 80-territory deal covering Asia and the Americas.

The league said the commercial agreement includes a commitment to grow Indonesian soccer at grassroots level, including supporting the Garuda Select, which involves national team youth players going to Europe to train and play matches.

Club visits and Bundesliga Legend appearances also form part of the agreement, as the league seeks to deepen its ties in Asian markets.

The league announced similar plans in Vietnam in June, when it signed a five-year rights deal with Next Media Solutions. An agreement with Sky PerfecTV, the pay-TV operator in Japan, is the other deal agreed to date in Asia for the cycle beginning 2020-21. The league already has a five-year, $250-million contract in China with PPTV, the Suning-owned streaming service, which runs to 2022-23.

Robert Klein, chief executive of Bundesliga International, said today: “We are delighted to have Mola TV as our partner in Indonesia and look forward to working together to make the Bundesliga the league of choice amongst Indonesian football fans. As well as promoting our brand of fast, high-scoring, world-class football, we are also very excited to work with Mola TV and it’s Garuda Select project to support the development of local Indonesian football talent.

"Our goal is to work closely with our partners on the ground, delivering unrivalled experiences to the Indonesian fans by bringing Bundesliga Legends, Bundesliga Experiences and Bundesliga football to the region.”

The Bundesliga's new six-year deal in USA with ESPN, in which coverage will be focused on over-the-top streaming service ESPN+, begins with the 2020-21 season, while a four-year deal with Nordic Entertainment Group for Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland kicks in a year later.
