Google and Disney Plus Hotstar in IPL in-game highlights deal
Cricket - 13 Apr 2021
Disney Plus Hotstar, the collaboration between Disney and India's Hotstar streaming service, has entered into a partnership with technology giant Google for live coverage of cricket's Indian Premier League.
Under the partnership, Google search users who look up #IPL or search for a specific team will be able to watch live, in-game highlights during matches in the ongoing 2021 IPL, and also afterwards, through the search engine’s Web Stories service.
The search result will come up with a web story option next to the usual options, which when clicked will generate the highlights.
Anuvrat Rao, Google’s head of search product partnerships for the Asia-Pacific region, said: “Excited to share our first ever IPL 2021 web stories partnership with Hotstar, live for every game this season. Glad that during these difficult times, with fans missing out on the action in stadiums, we are able to do our part to bring more of the IPL to homes directly.”
Disney Plus Hotstar (renamed from Hotstar last year) holds Indian streaming rights to the IPL while television coverage is provided by its parent Star India.
The 2021 IPL started on 9 April, and runs to 30 May, with matches initially taking place behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic still prevalent in India.
